The thyroid is a small gland that is located in the front of your throat. Although your thyroid is a tiny gland, it plays a major role in various body functions. It is responsible for the production of and storing hormones that play a role in how almost every organ in your body operates. For instance, these hormones help to regulate muscle control, bone maintenance, metabolic rate, digestion, and the development of the brain. For these reasons, it is critical that you seek medical help right away if you are experiencing any thyroid issues in order to get a thyroid evaluation, which our chiropractor at Dr. Mynster in Hermitage can provide, to determine if the thyroid is functioning correctly. Here are some signs that may alert you of potential problems with your thyroid.
Diagnosing Thyroid Problems
There are several tests your chiropractor may order to determine what type of thyroid issues you may be having. The primary purpose of a thyroid evaluation is to measure the markers of your thyroid health, which includes hormones production in your thyroid gland and other organs that play a role in thyroid functioning, such as the pituitary gland. One of the tests our doctor may order is Thyroflex testing, which is used when making a diagnosis of hypothyroidism and to determine the optimum dose of thyroid medications. Other tests may include a TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone) and a T4. A thyroid function test generally looks for the main substances in your blood, including hormones, antibodies, and proteins.
Symptoms of Thyroid Issues
The symptoms of a thyroid problem will vary depending on the type of thyroid issues you are having, which may be either hypothyroidism (underactive) or hyperthyroidism (overactive). The difference between the two is the amount of hormones being released. If you have a hypothyroid, not enough hormones are being released. Hyperthyroid means that there is too much being released. Although both types may have varying symptoms, some common traits to be aware of include:
- Feelings of depression
- Extreme fatigue
- Muscles extremities are sore and achy
- Difficulty regulating temperature
- Hair loss
- Swollen hands and swollen feet
If you notice any symptoms that may be related to your thyroid, especially swollen hands, swollen feet, and fatigue, schedule an appointment with our chiropractor at Dr. Mynster in Hermitage as soon as possible. The sooner you have a thyroid evaluation, the sooner you can start treatment.
